On short notice, a Russian research ship with Russian & American scientists was sent on a 45 day expedition to confirm reports of the sea "boiling". Led by Igor Semiletov, also funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the group found "methane torches" coming from the seabed in the Eastern Arctic in September 2011.
